Such tasks, where the learners are in effect asked to map grammar on to lexis, involve a process known variously as grammaticization (Batstone 1994) or 'grammaring' (Thornbury 2001). By engaging in this kind of activity, learners experience the process of using their grammatical resources to develop the meaning potential contained in the lexical items and express a range of meanings which the words alone could not convey. Such a process is not dissimilar to the processes involved in first language acquisition whereby the child moves from communication through telegraphic utterances involving strings of lexical items to the gradual deployment of morphemes and function words. It is not, however, a process promoted in traditional approaches to grammar teaching such as the presentation-practice-production format, where the learners are typically asked to move in the opposite direction—they begin with a preselected grammatical structure, and then have to slot lexis into it.

3. Comparing texts and noticing gaps

Heuer (now TAG Heuer) began making a reputation for precise timing particularly in aviation and auto racing. They utilized one dial and a single casing for the stopwatch and wristwatch they combined. John Harwood developed a self-winding mechanism which he patented in 1923. In 1926, Rolex, though a relative new-comer to the watchmaking industry, invented a water-resistant watch, the Oyster.

Tissot created an anti-magnetic design in 1929, and the fragile glass covering the dial of many models were replaced with a more durable plastic crystal. At the same time, some innovations developed in relation to the watch mechanism. First came the automatic watch, which did not need to be wound manually. Then came the quartz watch in the late 1920s. This method is called Filigrana, and is now copied all over the world. Some contemporary artists are using this ancient Murano glass technique to produce spectacular, but not always wearable, glass jewelry. It is not easy to hang around the neck a necklace made of fragile large sky blue blown beads, like those made by well known glass artist Giorgio Vigna, shown recently at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.

Since the Moretti Murano family started using copper mandrel in 1920s, this method became standard in making wound beads, and it also allowed for some interesting forms. The mandrel was cut off just below the bead and the bead was dunked in nitric acid. The acid dissolved the copper inside the bead and etched the interior surface in interesting patterns. Today, most murano glass bead makers use stainless steel or silver, for more delicate beads.

Lampwork is also used to make wound beads, made by melting glass over a mandrel (a core). Originally, the Murano beads were wound over a ferrous mandrel called "fango". Since this word means mud in Italian, it is said that the mud was taken from the Venice lagoon, adding to the mystery of these beautiful beads.

Seed beads are made from hollow thin glass tubes that are cut very fine and then re-fired to smooth the edges and add color. They are used to make intricate glass jewelry and festive clothes, especially wedding gowns.
